Notes |
The 1901 census shows the Brinkworth family living at 6 The Causeway.
William H Brinkworth is listed as a coal merchant.
There are no other J Brinkworths listed in the 1901 census with any links
to Wiltshire or Chippenham apart from Edwin John. Apparently Edwin was
known as John and as the Boys school memorial lists a Jack Brinkworth. It
is common for John and Jack to be used as the same name it is more than
likely that Edwin John and Jack Brinkworth are one and the same person.
Brinkworth's father, Major WH Brinkworth owned the Chippenham wharf until
the closure of the Wilts and Berks canal. He was educated at the
Chippenham Secondary School and then worked in the savings bank department
of London Post Office before moving to the Capital and Counties Bank as a
clerk.
He joined the 26th (Bankers) Btn, Royal Fusiliers serving in France until
he obtained a commission in 1917 in the 15th DLI.
Brinkworth's grandfather, JH Brinkworth, was mayor of Chippenham in 1858
