For King and Country
To those of those who have gone forth to the War from Chippenham and
have given their lives for King and Country must be added Pte G Duck, only
son of Mr Councillor Duck of Parklane. Pte Duck who was at one time was at
the bookstall at Chippenham Station, and at the time of his enlistment he
was in charge of the bookstall at Frome railway station. He joined the 4th
Somersets and was sent to Serbia. He was killed November 20th (This
date is wrong) last but his parents for who great sympathy is felt
only received the official news on Tuesday last. (18th January)
Wilts Times 22 January 1916
The Mayor referred to the sad loss Mr Councillor Duck had sustained by
the death of his son , who was killed whilst fighting in the Persian Gulf,
and moved that the Town Clerk write to Mr Duck expressing the deep
sympathy of the council with him and his family in their bereavement. The
motion was supported by Mr Alderman Neale and agreed to.
