Notes |
Son of Henry Powell of Sheldon Road. Powell had been wounded at Ypres
and sent home to recuperate before returning to the his battalion and was
killed in action at Neuve Chappelle.
Mother died 2 Jan 1918 aged 59 'Ypres' Sheldon Rd - I did think that
Powell's father named the house thinking that he had died in the fighting
around Ypres. But as he was actually killed at Neuve Chappell, I do not
think this is correct as I am sure his father would have known the correct
battle. On the other side of the road to number 51 is a group of houses with
names which commemorate Lord Kitchener and the Sudan battles. Perhaps number
51 was the first in the row which was to be named after battles of the Great
War but the rest were never named? Obviously this is speculation only.
