Son of Mr. and Mrs. John Wood of Chippenham.

Educated at Westmead School before working at the Excel Fish Café (Audley Road now Shoestrings) Groves Dairy (3 The Causeway) and Spear Bros and Clark. Wood was called up with the first batch of militiamen in July 1939. Wood married Miss E Norris of Swindon in Feb 1940. Wood's parents lived at 9 Emery Lane, Chippenham.
