Pilot Officer KJ Holmes awarded DFC

"Gallantry and Determination in carrying out a dangerous operation in the face of intense enemy opposition" has earned the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Pilot Officer Kenneth James Holmes, son in law of Mr and Mrs W Vaughan of the George Hotel, Chippenham.

Plt Off Holmes who is 27 years of age, is attached to Coastal Command. A member of the regular RAF, he was a Sgt pilot at the out break of war and was commissioned to his present rank last year. He married Miss Mary Vaughan, the elder daughter of Mr and Mrs Vaughan at Chippenham Parish church about 18 months ago. Plt Off Holmes has occasionally assisted at the Lowden Cricket club while on leave in Chippenham. He is a native of Edinburgh.

Officer Killed while Flying

Married only 18 months ago a Chippenham lady has been bereaved by the death of her husband, Plt Off Kenneth James Holmes DFC who lost his life flying recently. At the same time his brother in law, Fg Off Philip Price was injured and taken to hospital.

About 6 weeks ago it was announced that Holmes had been awarded the DFC. It is understood that the award was in respect of bombing flights over enemy occupied territory and he was expecting the presentation in the next week or two.

The injured officer, Fg Off Price was married to Mr and Mrs Vaughan’s youngest daughter shortly before the war.

The funeral will take place on Saturday at Chippenham.
