Died between 02/01/1941
and 03/01/1941
Son of William John and Frances Matilda Hibberd, of Chippenham; husband of
Constance Caroline Hibberd, of Chippenham.
A Chippenham soldier Driver Wilfred George Hibberd, RASC of 38 Marshall
Street has lost his life in a tragedy which also resulted in the deaths of
two other soldiers. It is understood the men were poisoned while they slept
by the fumes from a stove which they themselves had installed in their hut.
Driver Hibberd, who was 26, leaves a young wife and a five year old son. A
native of Chippenham, he was the only son of Mr William Hibberd of Downing
Street. He joined the Army in June last and had previously worked in the
Chippenham Condensery. The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon at
Hardenhuish Church when six soldiers acted as bearers.
